The Future of Health Care Education

Nursing is a true calling for those in this demanding yet rewarding profession. Nurses are caregivers, teachers, critical thinkers and innovators on the frontline of patient care. They are often a patient’s greatest advocate, providing invaluable medical and emotional support for patients and their families while also offering comfort and stability.

For more than a decade, the United States has experienced a severe nursing shortage which will only increase as more nurses reach retirement age. Even as colleges and universities consistently produce well-trained nurses, the supply simply cannot meet the high demand for health care.

About the College

Nursing students stand around a hospital bed listening to an instructor. As a major player in the future of health care, the Capstone College of Nursing at The University of Alabama is poised to have an even greater impact on the field of nursing. With an emphasis on meeting the needs of rural and underserved populations, the Capstone College of Nursing (CCN) has expanded its Master of Science in Nursing program to produce more family nurse practitioners and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners. The College is also making an impact on the nursing profession by adding a third cohort each year for both the RN-to-BSN and traditional BSN programs, enhancing its nursing administration program and implementing a new doctorate program with the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Over the past decade, the need to expand the College’s facility has become crucial as these programs and the number of qualified nursing applicants continue to increase. The College is currently housed in a 64,000-square-foot building, the first of its kind on UA’s flagship campus designed specifically for nursing education. Despite being equipped with highly innovative health care technology, the current space is simply no longer large enough to accommodate the College’s growth.

About the Project

Recognizing CCN’s continued growth and seeing the compelling need for more space, The Board of Trustees of The University of Alabama has announced plans for a building expansion on the west side of the College’s existing facility.

The proposed three-story, 32,000 square foot building expansion will significantly impact the College’s ability to support more highly qualified students in achieving their dreams to become professional nurses. The expansion will include two 150-seat multipurpose classrooms, a home health care lab suite, a practicum lab, additional examination rooms, a research lab and more than 30 new offices for faculty and staff. The student experience will be greatly improved by the addition of on-site food service, additional quiet study areas, collaborative work carrels, private space for academic and career advising and a 2,000-square-foot outdoor terrace.

Opportunities

An effective expansion project requires more than just bricks and mortar. While the building expansion is expected to be fully funded from previously identified resources, we still need your support to amplify the use of the expansion through contributions to the Nursing Discretionary Endowed Enhancement Fund. Earnings from this support fund will be used for a variety of purposes in support of the program’s mission, including, but not limited to, faculty support, professional development and research, and graduate student support, research or scholarships.

Your contributions to this fund will enhance the functionality of the existing facility and expansion, while increasing opportunities for growth, especially in the areas of faculty and graduate student support. Help educate the nurses of tomorrow by investing in the future of health care today. At this time, naming opportunities are available in the expansion associated with the Nursing Discretionary Endowed Enhancement Fund.
