UA to Increase Gift Minimum to Establish an Endowment

Increase to provide more substantial support to students

The Rising Tide 2.0 Capital Campaign has galvanized thousands of people to align their aspirations for The University of Alabama and unleash a force of unprecedented giving to the Capstone, leading to the creation of more than 1,100 new scholarship and program support endowments.

This historic level of philanthropic support from UA’s alumni and friends has provided an opportunity to further maximize the impact of our endowments. This will be accomplished by increasing the minimum gift required to establish an endowment for scholarships and support funds from $25,000 to $50,000.

The increase in the minimum gift requirement to create an endowment for UA and its affiliate foundations will take effect on the following dates:

  • Crimson Tide Foundation – July 1, 2025
  • UA Law School Foundation – July 1, 2025
  • The University of Alabama – October 1, 2025
  • UA National Alumni Association – July 1, 2026

This change will better align the administrative costs and processes associated with establishing and managing the endowments. More importantly, it ensures that our endowment funds can provide more substantial support for our students. Currently, a $25,000 endowment provides an average annual allocation of $1,125, or 9.8% of in-state and 3.4% of out-of-state tuition. Comparatively, a $2,250 annual distribution from a $50,000 scholarship fund at a 4.5% spending rate can better benefit students and programs.

To create a new endowment at the current rate of $25,000, the donor must have signed a memorandum of agreement and made the gift (or pledge) to the respective UA entity no later than the day immediately prior to the effective date of the new minimum shown above. Existing endowments of $25,000, whether already established or currently being paid through a pledge, will not be affected.
