Alston Hall

Upgrading the Heart of the Culverhouse College of Business

The symbolic heart of the Culverhouse College of Business, Mary Hewell Alston Hall is a conduit through which thousands of individuals — students, faculty, staff, alumni and visitors — pass every day. With large lecture halls on the ground floor and administrative offices on the floors above, Alston Hall is vital to the learning and operations functions of The University of Alabama’s business school.

The building needs renovations to bring it to the same design standard as the rest of the Culverhouse College of Business campus while also incorporating dynamic team and meeting spaces that intentionally allow for focused collaborative interactions.

Dean’s Message

Guided by our TIDE Together values, the Culverhouse College of Business has recently seen incredible transformations.

We are now almost 10,000 students strong, our academic programs are ranked among the best in the country, our research agenda has accelerated such that we are now recognized among the world’s best b-schools in terms of research productivity, and our alumni and friends have redoubled their commitments to us as part of The University of Alabama’s Rising Tide Capital Campaign.

We have also added a new building and transformed another, further elevating the standard here at Culverhouse to bring it in line with the expectations of alums and prospective and current students.

Mary Hewell Alston Hall, the organizational hub for the College, a learning space for students and a gathering space for visitors and alumni, is in critical need of improvements and renovations to bring it to the same standard as the rest of our facilities.

With your support, we will rework Alston Hall throughout, adding more spaces for student-focused interactions. Improvements also include reimagining the fourth floor, home to key administrative offices, to allow for better team collaboration.

It is an exciting time to be involved with Culverhouse — consider being a part of the effort to overhaul Alston Hall.

Thanks, and Roll Tide!

Kay Palan, PhD
Dean, Culverhouse College of Business

About the Project

Overlooking Stadium Drive, Mary Hewell Alston Hall requires extensive renovation from top to bottom.

The building, constructed in 1991, is particularly visible and vitally important to the operations of The University of Alabama’s Culverhouse College of Business.

Thousands of individuals pass through Alston Hall on any given day: from students learning in the large lecture halls on the ground floor, to the faculty and staff working in the departmental offices above, to the prospective students touring campus for the first time.

The vision for the Alston Hall renovation project includes the complete overhaul of the dean’s office suite on the fourth floor and the restructuring of offices for the college’s development, alumni and corporate relations, and marketing and communications groups in order to foster intra- and inter-team collaborations. Furthermore, the plans include the addition of meeting spaces for use by faculty and students and a revision of the ground floor commons, lobby and classrooms.

We are certain that these updates will bring Alston Hall to the same world-class standard as adjacent facilities in the business campus, including the all-new Hewson Hall and the just-renovated Angelo Bruno Business Library and Sloan Y. Bashinsky Sr. Computer Center.

With new gathering, learning and team spaces throughout, the updates will reinforce Alston Hall’s role as a highly visible focal point for interactions that drive forward Culverhouse’s teaching, research and service-focused mission.
