Founded in 1831 as the state’s first public college, The University of Alabama is dedicated to excellence in teaching, research and service. The Division of Advancement and its more than 100 staff members work cohesively to enhance this mission by engaging diverse constituencies, promoting UA and its accomplishments, raising private gift support and celebrating philanthropy.
The University has experienced incredible fundraising success during The Rising Tide Capital Campaign 2.0, a 10-year, $1.8 billion effort transforming all areas of campus, from student scholarships to faculty research, facilities and athletics. The Rising Tide Capital Campaign was launched publicly in September 2021 and early 2024 reached its original $1.5 billion goal with more than two years left in the initial Campaign timeline. On March 1, 2024, UA announced The Rising Tide 2.0, a bold 20 percent increase in the Campaign’s goal that will further strengthen the foundation of support for future generations of UA students.
The Rising Tide 2.0 Capital Campaign is the most successful fundraising campaign for higher education in the history of the state of Alabama, and its impact across campus has been remarkable: over 1,000 new endowed scholarships, more than 60 new faculty endowments and in excess of 500,000 square feet of new campus facilities constructed. Additionally, the University finished back-to-back record fundraising years in fiscal years 2022 and 2023, each generating approximately $226 million.

Why Tuscaloosa
Tuscaloosa was founded on December 3, 1819 and was named for Chief Tuskaloosa (which means “Black Warrior”). Located about 50 miles southwest of Birmingham, the City of Tuscaloosa has a population of 113,711 (2024).
A pillar of the state’s educational infrastructure, Tuscaloosa is home to the University of Alabama, Shelton State Community College, and Stillman College. Several multi-national corporations, including Michelin Tires and Mercedes-Benz, have selected Tuscaloosa as a site for their manufacturing plants, establishing Tuscaloosa as a mainstay of the global economic community.
The Black Warrior River runs through the heart of the city and along the northern edge of UA’s campus. Its 4.5-mile River Walk features a paved trail for walking and biking, The Park at Manderson Landing, restaurants and the Tuscaloosa River Market. The trail also provides a playground near the Public Library and a splash pad at the Bama Bell dock. The trail is well lighted with street lamps lining the trail.
The city’s premier music venue, the Mercedes-Benz Amphitheater, is nestled along the banks of the Black Warrior River and is within walking distance of downtown Tuscaloosa, where upscale hotels, restaurants, museums and art galleries are located.
